Sunday Morning at St. Aidan's

The Sunday service is a family celebration of the Eucharist or Holy Communion. The bell starts to ring at 9:55 am to gather us in.

We offer a children’s ministry program as well as nursery care from September through June. Parents and children are invited to meet our Children’s Ministry team downstairs in the parish hall before the service begins.

Our teachers and care providers will bring your children upstairs to reunite with you before we gather at the altar to share the meal that God provides for us. An order of service is given to you when you arrive and hymnals and prayer books are located in the pews.

The choir and rector - minister - arrive through the back of the church and walk towards the altar, led by the cross bearer, while everyone sings the first hymn. The choir move to their seats at the back of the altar, the cross is placed in a holder and the service begins with a welcome.

There are hymns and prayers, some led by the rector and some led by the people of St Aidan's. Next there are readings from the Bible. The Gospel is read from the centre of the congregation. Everyone turns towards the reader. This is followed by a sermon. Then a church member leads the Prayers for the People.

The main part of the service is the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. Everyone is welcome to take part in this at St Aidan's. The sidespersons organise lines of people to kneel or stand around the altar.

If you do not wish to take communion [receive bread and wine] you are welcome to go up and kneel or stand at the altar for a blessing.

The choir sings during the Eucharist and some people join in.

Afterwards there are prayers after as we prepare to go out and do God's work in the world.

As the service ends, we have announcements, by the rector or by another person with news to share or events to discuss. Sometimes the news is of a birthday and we sing along with the organ.

As we sing the last hymn, the server puts out the candles, and the procession reforms with the cross at the head, followed by the choir and the minister.

Following the cross, the procession moves towards the back of the church, and everyone pauses there while the dismissal is said by a member of the church or by the minister.

After the service we meet for coffee, tea, cookies and a chat. Usually this is in the church, but sometimes, we have a special visitor or celebration, then we set up the room downstairs and have lunch.

You are very welcome to come and be with us any Sunday at 10 am.
